The B-2 stand gets a new assignment

NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, long a cornerstone of American propulsion testing, is set to take on a fresh role in the country's commercial launch landscape. Blue Origin and NASA have finalized plans to conduct hot-fire tests of the New Glenn second stage on the facility's B-2 test stand. The stand has a well-documented history, having supported engine qualification campaigns for both the Space Shuttle Main Engine and, more recently, NASA's Space Launch System under the Artemis program.

New Glenn's upper stage is powered by a pair of BE-3U engines, a higher-performance derivative of the BE-3 that propels the suborbital New Shepard vehicle. The BE-3U burns liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, a propellant combination that delivers strong specific impulse figures but demands rigorous ground infrastructure to handle safely during test campaigns. The B-2 stand is one of a handful of U.S. facilities built to manage those requirements.

Reconstruction at LC-36 drives the decision

The move to Stennis is directly tied to ongoing construction work at Blue Origin's Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral in Florida. LC-36 has served as the operational base for New Glenn missions since the rocket entered service in 2025, but the pad is currently undergoing upgrades intended to support a higher launch cadence and accommodate anticipated changes to the vehicle's configuration. With the Florida site unavailable for engine testing during this period, Blue Origin needed an alternative.

Rather than delaying qualification work on the upper stage, the company chose to shift test operations northward to Stennis. The approach reflects a pragmatic schedule management strategy: keeping the development program moving in parallel with infrastructure work, rather than letting one block the other. No public timeline has been given for the completion of the LC-36 renovation.

Upper stage performance at the heart of New Glenn's ambitions

New Glenn positions Blue Origin in direct competition with established heavy-lift providers including SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, ULA's Vulcan Centaur, and Arianespace's Ariane 6. In that competitive environment, upper stage reliability and performance are not secondary considerations — they determine whether a rocket can reach high-energy orbits or set a payload on an interplanetary trajectory.

The forthcoming hot-fire campaign at Stennis will be closely watched by Blue Origin's engineering teams and by the institutional and commercial customers who have shown interest in New Glenn's capabilities. NASA itself has been identified as a potential customer for the launcher across several science and exploration programs, making the agency's role as both landlord and prospective client at Stennis an interesting dynamic.

The two parties have not yet announced a specific start date for the B-2 test campaign, though the agreement is described as finalized. Further details on the testing schedule are expected as preparations at Stennis advance.
