The US military's approach to space is accelerating its shift toward a wider, more diversified industrial base. SpaceWERX, the technology acceleration arm of the US Space Force, has named eleven private firms as recipients of Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) awards, a program designed to move technologies from early-stage development into scalable, operationally relevant systems.

Unlike traditional defense procurement, STRATFI contracts require matching private investment — a structure intended to filter for companies with genuine commercial traction and reduce the cost and schedule overruns that have long plagued government-only programs.

Eleven companies, a deliberately broad portfolio

The selected firms span a wide range of technical disciplines. Agile Space Industries and Antares Nuclear are developing advanced propulsion systems, including nuclear thermal approaches that have attracted growing interest from defense planners seeking greater orbital maneuverability. Hydrosat and EO Solutions focus on high-resolution Earth observation and the exploitation of remotely sensed data for military applications.

Muon Space and Scout Space address space domain awareness — tracking objects, debris, and potentially adversarial satellites in low Earth orbit, a capability that has become increasingly urgent as orbital congestion grows. On the software and security side, Method Security and Sedaro are building cybersecurity frameworks and operational simulation tools tailored to space systems.

Rounding out the cohort, Kall Morris, Star Catcher Industries, and ThinkOrbital are pursuing in-space servicing and on-orbit manufacturing technologies — capabilities that could fundamentally alter how the military sustains and expands its presence beyond the atmosphere over the coming decades.

ISR from space: a doctrine under reconstruction

The STRATFI selections reflect a broader strategic conversation around space-based ISR — Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance conducted from orbit. Experts speaking at an industry panel recorded in May highlighted that the legacy ISR model, built around large geostationary platforms developed during the Cold War era, is facing fundamental pressure from new operational realities.

The shift toward constellations of smaller satellites in low Earth orbit changes the basic rhythm of military intelligence. Revisit times that once spanned hours are compressing toward near-continuous coverage of contested regions. When combined with onboard processing and artificial intelligence, the pipeline from collection to actionable intelligence — previously measured in hours — is approaching real-time delivery to field commanders.

The companies selected by SpaceWERX are positioned precisely at those capability gaps: persistent orbital observation, data link resilience, and reconfigurable payloads that can adapt to evolving mission requirements.

A procurement model worth watching

The STRATFI mechanism itself is becoming a reference point within the defense innovation community. By mandating co-investment from private capital, the US Space Force is deliberately curating a cohort of companies that are already accountable to commercial investors — a discipline that government-only programs rarely impose.

Whether the majority of these eleven awardees successfully transition their technologies to operational deployment remains an open question. The path from a STRATFI contract to a fielded military system involves additional procurement hurdles that have tripped up promising startups before. But if even a portion of this cohort delivers, the composition of the US military space industrial base in five years could look markedly different from the one dominated by legacy prime contractors today.
